After leaving London I set off for Featherstone in West Yorkshire but only got as far as Wembly before the car started making some unusual noises from the engine, I pulled up at the side of the road with two wheels on the kerb and had a look at the engine but couldn't see anything so I phoned the AA and they sent out a mechanic and after inspecting said it wasn't good news as to him it sounded like the little end bearings. When he asked me where I was headed he was shocked when I told him West Yorks and as I had recovery that was where I wanted taking (180 miles away) when he got his breath back he opened the back of his van and out came this contraption that goes under the front wheels and lifts them off the road allowing him to tow me back home.
Well the journey took around four hours, arriving about 9.00 pm and after setting the beetle on the deck and doing the paperwork the AA man set off for London (poor man).
The next day I phoned my nephew Ricky( http://rickyp-rpm.co.uk/ he specialises in performance upgrades on mainly Citroen and Peugeot small cars) and he got his friend to come over with a low-loader and take the car to his garage for storage until I was ready to work on it. Eventually Ricky made room to get the car inside and I set about removing the engine and with a little help it was out after about 2 hours work, now I just need to decide whether to get a re-con engine or attempt to repair the engine myself.
